The Ted Baker Story

The story so far....
Eureka! Ted has the idea for a global brand while fishing and in 1988, Ted opens his first store in Glasgow, quickly followed by stores in Manchester King Street and Nottingham Exchange Arcade.  In 1990, Ted's first London store starts trading in Covent Garden and the company is bought outright from Goldberg and Sons.  In 1992, The "Blue Baker" range is launched and Ted soon opens stores in West Soho, London, Nottingham, Bridlesmith Gate and Leeds, Victoria Quarter. Ted becomes a privately owned company again.
The year is now 1994 and Ted entrusts his brand to others and launches his wholesale business in the UK. Liverpool Button Street opens, as well as launching Ted Baker "Women" and Ted Baker "Lite" lines.  In order to gain further exposure in the US Market, Ted begins wholesale trading in the USA at Magic '96, shortly after he launches Teddy Boy as "small cuts dressed by Ted". He also opens Womenswear shops in Leeds and Covent Garden. The first continental franchise in Zurich opens in 1994 and helps Ted branch in to Europe. Ted Baker becomes a public company. "Ted Baker PLC" trading as "Ted Baker, No Ordinary Designer Label Limited". We extend and refurbish the stores in Liverpool and Manchester while Glasgow's store is treated to a refurbishment.  Soon after Ted opens his very first standalone store on American soil in New York, not to mention the very first website online for an international audience. "Skinwear" and "Underwear" launches make for an exciting year.

Bluewater sees the opening of the largest Ted store yet and the year is 1999. A legend is born when Ted creates and launches the "Endurance" suit and also launches the new fragrance, "Woman". The Ted Baker on-line store trades for the first time followed by a completely new women's store in Manchester.  With the Millennium abound, Ted Baker 'Footwear' and 'Teddy Girl' collections are up and running this year, whilst online, the store wins the international Ecommerce award. Ted's home becomes the Ugly Brown Building, where we are now, and the largest Ted Baker store to date opens in Birmingham. We sign the US license with Hartmarx Corp and new stores in Richmond, Canary Wharf and the King's Road open.
Now in the beginning of 2001,the, 'Eyewear' and 'Jeanswear' collections are launched and Ted also opens his first airport store at Gatwick. Pentland sign the license agreement for Ted Baker Footwear. Across the pond, we get to see Ted within Bloomingdale's in New York. Ted's Sheffield store opens.  Followed by stores in Heathrow airport and Paris, are opened. "Ooh la la!", "M and W", two new fragrances, are unveiled, and Ted Baker Home and Watches are launched for Autumn/Winter. The flagship store in Covent Garden is opened, and stores in San Jose and Miami quickly follow suit. In November Ted becomes the sponsor of Team Bath who become the first university side in 113 years to play in the "first round proper" of the FA cup!
Ted's luxury collection "Global" is launched along with its own limited edition fragrance of the same name. A new three-storey standalone store is opened in Manchester. Paris also sees the opening of a new concession in La Samaritaine department store. The new King's Road and Bicester stores open.  Ted Baker debuts in Australia and New Zealand, and the Phantom collection is launched. Ted opens San Francisco, Guildford and Stanstead plus the first Endurance store is opened in Langley Court.  The new Nottingham store opens.
Ted's Place goes live in America to launch 2004 with a bang. The Ugly Brown Building gets an extra floor as Ted's team expands still further. "Secondscent", something new for the ladies, launches in time for summer. Ted expands further into USA with openings in Los Angeles, Dallas and a new Womenswear store opens next door to the existing New York store. Ted Baker "Archive" the classic shirt and tie collection launches, as do the exclusive to Boots "Bodywear" ranges for men and women. Ted signs three new license agreements for Asia and the Middle East. Heathrow gets downsized but renovated. The menswear concession in Selfridges London gets rejuvenated and Ted's first Danish location within Illum, Copenhagen opens. New export partners for Benelux come on board.
Ted rounds off the year with the relaunch of his online store, www.tedbaker.com and store openings, both near and far from home, in Bath, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Jakarta and Bangkok.
In 2007, Ted begins an action packed year with further store openings in Dubai and Malaysia, and updates UK stores in Sheffield and Glasgow. May sees the opening of an exquisite standalone womenswear store at Langley Court, Covent Garden.  New stores are opened in Taiwan and Gatwick’s North Terminal. Autumn sees the launch of the new Pashion and Livewire Endurance suits. Not to mention, Ted’s mobile phones - The Button and The Needle - and a rather lovely jewelry line. Rounding things off nicely, Ted continued his international expansion with stores in Melbourne and Miami.
Well it is now 2008 and Happy Birthday to Ted. This year, Ted is 20 years young. While some might take a moment to reflect on all theyΓÇÖve achieved, not Ted. No, heΓÇÖs got more planned than ever. New stores in Belfast and Cambridge are in the pipeline. WhatΓÇÖs more, heΓÇÖs embarking on his most exciting venture to date, Ted Baker & Friends.
Located on Cheapside in the heart of the City of London, this concept store will see Ted join forces with King of Shaves Pro, The Carphone Warehouse, Cushion The Impact and Street Shine to provide the ultimate one-stop-shop for busy City types.
....and the beat goes on!
